Leixões, Portugal (PortSEurope) November 28, 2018 – Portuguese automotive assembly plant operator AutoEuropa Automóveis, Lda., part of Volkswagen AG, has decided to use the port of Leixões as an alternative for the handling of cars, due to the strike of dockers in the port of Setúbal, which has limited the export of cars produced by the Palmela factory in Portugal.
This morning at the port of Leixões, the ship ‘Patara’, which came from Santander port in Spain, was loaded with hundreds of Volkswagen cars. The Volkswagen Group’s factory is producing 880 units per day. Only this week, in a first wave, the port of Leixões will receive 700 cars from the factory. The ports of Santander and Vigo in Spain will also be used to fill the void left by the port of Setúbal since the eventual dockers started a strike on November 5. At least seven ships have returned from Setúbal to the country of origin completely empty.
