Italy
Italy is a republic in southern Europe, comprising a peninsula south of the Alps, and Sicily, Sardinia, Elba, and other smaller islands; member of the European Union (EU); by tonnage, its leading ports are Trieste, Genoa and Gioia Tauro. In September 2016, the government reorganised the port system into 16 new port system authorities (AdSP – Autorità di Sistema Portuale). The 57 ports of national importance are coordinated by 16 AdSPs with the task of planning, coordinating and regulating the port system in the reference area. The AdSPs are members of the Italian port association – Assoporti.
