Marseille Port Gives ESI Awards To Environmental Shippers

Marseille, France (PortSEurope) June 17, 2019 – On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, Hervé Martel, President of the Executive Board of the Port of Marseille Fos, presented the ESI Awards to 12 shipping and container ships and cruise ships for having surpassed the standards imposed on atmospheric emissions.

The first port in France and the Mediterranean to offer the electrical connection of ships to quay for La Méridionale (which now involves nearly 500 stopovers per year), in 2017 Marseille Fos joined the Environmental Index of Ships (ESI) of the World Ports Climate initiative (WPCI).

Initiated by the ports of Le Havre, Bremen, Hamburg, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) is a performance index, resulting from the World Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI), of which Marseille Fos is signatory, assigning a score to ships, container ships and cruise ships in terms of air emissions. The index expresses the environmental performance of ships for certain air pollutants: NOx, SOx and CO2. Since its implementation more than 50 ports and nearly a quarter of the ships in the world share this approach.

The ESI is an incentive mechanism, setting a score to be achieved beyond regulatory requirements. A report is made every year and premiums are paid to the most virtuous shipowners (discount per stop). The port of Marseille Fos has chosen to reward ports with an ESI score of 35 or higher. The shipping companies that operate the most respectful of the air quality vessels get an “Environmental award”. This concerned 290 stopovers in 2018.

For 2018, twelve companies were rewarded for surpassing the standards imposed.

The winners for the cruise category are: Aida, Costa and MSC Cruises; and for container ships: Arkas, CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen, Hapag Lloyd, ONE, MSC, OOCL and Yang Ming.

The rewarded companies will benefit from a discount of 2 to 3% on their port dues during their stopovers. This financial incentive is part of the actions put in place by the port of Marseille Fos to encourage clean maritime navigation.
