Setúbal, Portugal (PortSEurope) November 30, 2018 – Three international shipowners, McAndrews, Tarros, and Arkas, have suspended their calls to Setúbal port, diverting the containers mainly to the northern Spanish ports of Vigo and Santander.
The decision is the result of the labour dispute started several weeks ago by trade union SEAL and is expected to cause a 70% drop in the container cargo handled by the port.
“The three companies have decided to stop calling in Setúbal because they do not wish to incur additional costs,” Diogo Marecos, manager of Operestiva, one of the two suppliers of stevedoring personnel to the port of Setúbal, said.
If the three shipowners do not return to the port of Setúbal, the harbour would lose about 8,550 TEUs in December, compared to the same month of 2017.
