Livorno, Italy (PortSEurope) October 1, 2021 – The long-debated Darsena Europa, the future container terminal for the Port of Livorno, has taken a step closer towards realisation. From October 6, the port authority will publish a tender for two preparatory phases for the actual construction of the dock. The tender has a total value of €450 million ($521.1 million) of which €200 million of which
come from the Region’s budget. The client is Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Settentrionale (AdSP – North Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority). During an event to present the project, president of the AdSP Luciano Guerrieri illustrated the project. It includes the protection works of the new port entrance of the port (North entrance), the new port basin of the Darsena Europa with access channel, construction of new containment tanks and dredging work. This will affect 5km of breakwater dam and the dredging of 16 million m³ of sand and mud. Some of the excavated material will be used for the new dock and for rebuilding beaches in Calambrone and Tirrenia, which have been subject to erosion. The work is part of the national port plan which will see benefits for not just Livorno, but also for the Tuscany region and Italy as a whole. It will benefit Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci, a logistics centre that serves the whole region., and be linked to the EU’s TEN-T rail networks. The president also said that at the same time as the start of public works, and after the successful award of the first phase interventions, the port will proceed, with a separate contract, to assign a concession for the construction of a container terminal to accommodate traffic for a total of 1.6 million TEU containers. The dimensions of the terminal include 60 hectares of yard, a quay of 1,400 linear meters with depths at -16 meters (with the possibility of deepening up to -20 meters), an access channel with depths at -17 meters (with the possibility of deepening at -21 m). Darsena Europa is a €450 million project that aims to make the port of Livorno attractive to medium-sized container ships ith a capacity of up to 10,000 containers. A graphic of the proposed development published by the AdSP is accessible here. In the first half of 2021, the port of Livorno handled 4.29 million tons of cargo in containers. The port is under the management of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Settentrionale (AdSP – North Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority). Copyright (C) PortSEurope. All Rights Reserved. 2021.
