Port of Novorossiysk again with the highest cargo turnover among Russia’s ports with 104.79 million tonnes in Jan-Sep’21

Novorossiysk, Russia (PortSEurope) October 29, 2021 – Cargo turnover of Russia’s seaports during the first nine months of 2021 was 622.05 million tonnes (+1.8% year-on-year), according to the local Association of Commercial Seaports. The highest cargo turnover was in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk - 104.79 million tonnes (decline of 0.6% compared to the same period of 2020) which represent 17% of the total cargo turnover of all Russia’s ports. Novorossiysk, in the past years Russia’s largest by cargo turnover, will be reinstated in the privatisation plan of the government after being removed from the list in December 2020. The state will sell its 20% stake in the public joint-stock company Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port (PJSC NCSP Group) by 2024. For the sale, a decision of the president and the government is required. The controlling shareholder of PJSC NCSP (62%) is PJSC Transneft. PortSEurope: Russia to sell its 20% in port of Novorossiysk, the country’s largest by cargo turnover - October 17, 2021 Second highest cargo turnover in the January-September period - 80.02 tonnes - was reported by the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga (+4.4%), third came the port of Vostochny in Nakhodka Bay with 57.23 million tons (-1.7%). Vostochny port operates with two major terminals with a cargo capacity of 80 million tonnes. In 2020, it handled 77 million tonnes of cargo including the export. In the internodal structure, the coal loading takes place at the special coal terminal. With the completion of phase 3 of the development of the port its handling capacities will increase to over 100 million tonnes. The top five ports in terms of cargo turnover also include the Big Port of St. Petersburg - 46.5 million tonnes (+5.1%) and the port of Murmansk - 41.33 million tonnes (-0.6%). The Black Sea port of Taman was on 13th place in the ranking with 25.73 million tonnes (an impressive growth of 68.8%). The construction of the third stage of the Taman Bulk Cargo Terminal (TTNG), Russia’s largest, has been approved in March by the Ministry of Construction. The commissioning of the third stage, as well as the distribution of traffic flows between the structures and facilities under construction within the two previous stages, will make it possible to achieve TTNG’s estimated annual cargo turnover of 60 million tonnes. Transshipment of coal and anthracite will reach 50 million tonnes, and the handling of technical sulphur and mineral fertilisers – 5 million tonnes each. The specialised bulk cargo terminal is part of the port-industry cluster created by Russia’s OTEKO group on the Taman Peninsula. Taman port is strategically located on the Russian side of the Kerch Strait that connects the Black and Azov Seas. It is on Cape Zheleznyy Rog (Iron Horn), across the strait from Russia-occupied Crimea peninsula that is legally part of Ukraine. The largest decrease in cargo turnover was in the ports of Kerch (on the Russia occupied Crimean peninsula; Ukraine internationally recognised boundaries include the contested area) - by 89.5%, to 155,500 tonnes and Olya - by 46.7%, to 271,700 tons. PLC Caspiy has received in September from Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development resident status for the port-type special economic zone (SEZ) Lotus in Olya port which is located in the Limansky District of the Astrakhan Region on the bank of Bakhtemir River connecting Volga River with the Caspian Sea. For the modernisation of existing and the construction of new berths Caspiy will rely on help from strategic partner Martrade Holding, a privately-owned German integrated logistics service provider offering worldwide services, with a corporate headquarters in Düsseldorf. The first stage of the project envisions installation of new equipment in the existing berths 8 and 9 of Olya port. Four new terminals with a total capacity of over 3 million tonnes are to be constructed by the end of 2023. The port’s annual throughput is forecast to reach 8 million tonnes by 2031. The total cargo turnover of the top 10 Russian ports in January-September 2021 was 463.78 million tonnes, which is 75% of the total cargo turnover and 4.6% more than in the same period of 2020.Copyright (C) PortSEurope.
