Vigo, Spain (PortSEurope) May 3, 2021 – The Port of Vigo cargo traffic grew by 4.56% during last March, compared to the general fall of -2.98% in cargo handled by state-managed ports. According to the president of Autoridad Portuaria de Vigo (APV – Port Authority of Vigo), Jesús Vázquez Almuíña, at the end of the Institution’s Board of Directors, the olívica terminal has once again
improved for the third consecutive month, being the leading port at the national level in vehicle movement, thanks to the rise of +9.61%, compared to a general fall of -9.72%. Cars had a big boost in March, especially exports. The consolidation of Belgium as the main destination for vehicle exports stands out, while the United Kingdom and Turkey account for a large part of the increase in exports, in addition to Chile and Greece. According to Vázquez Almuíña, automobiles constitute, together with containerized traffic, the most important traffic in the Port of Vigo. So much so that the number of units moved during the past month has grown dramatically, reaching an increase of +42.22%. “The result has been excellent”, said the port president, “since in the same month of 2019 and 2018, previous to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of cars moved was about 41,000 units, compared to more than 55,000 of this year. The port president indicated that, regarding the accumulated balance of this traffic during this first quarter, “it is also very positive”, by registering an increase of + 9.61%. “Belgium has become the European distribution center for cars exported from Vigo and Turkey is consolidated as one of the major importers, while, curiously, the United Kingdom is the third country, in units, to which exports are directed”, he explained. Leading in fishing During his speech, Vázquez Almuíña also referred to fishing traffic, and where the Port of Vigo is a world reference, once again leading the movements of this traffic, with more than 7,200 tons accumulated during the first quarter of the year. In this sense, the president of the Port of Vigo indicated that fresh fish has had an excellent performance during the month of March, with a growth both in volume discharged (+ 7.99%) and in value for sale (+23.60 %) of the products. In the case of frozen fish, last month has also been very positive, reaching a growth of + 10.87%, highlighting imports from Seychelles, Argentina and Peru. Transits with Portugal have also been increased. Other notable rises Likewise, and according to the statistics of the public body dependent on the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Vigo also recorded a + 0.73% increase in the movement of foreign import-export containers (outside of national territory), which placed Vigo at the top of the table, in a notable 5th place. In the same way, Vázquez Almuíña highlighted the increase of + 1.29% registered by imports of general merchandise, compared to the decrease of -0.14% in the total of ports, and that places the Olívica terminal in the 6th place in the national ranking, as well as the + 12% increase in exports of general merchandise, which was a 5th place for the Port of Vigo.
