Lisbon, Portugal (PortSEurope) November 27, 2018 – After a meeting yesterday, Minister of the Sea Ana Paula Vitorino, said that the union, the operators and port authorities were open to solve the problem of the labour issues in Setúbal port.
Workers at the port have been on strike since November 5, 2018.
“At the moment we have a willingness and an openness to solve the problem of the situation, although there are differences between unions and companies. One part proposes that there be 48 new contracts, on the other side 30. I think it will be possible to reach agreement”, the minister said.
SEAL (Sindicato dos Estivadores e da Actividade Logística/Union of Stevedores and Logistic Activity) wants to continue with a full strike, whilst operators believe the action should apply just to overtime, not standard hours of work.
According to Ana Paula Vitorino, the port of Setúbal represents only 7% of the national movement, but serves export and import companies, and is equally important in terms of job creation.
