Turkish Competition Authority prohibits acquisition by Terminal Investment Limited Sàrl of Marport

Istanbul, Turkey (PortSEurope) March 19, 2021 – The Turkish Competition Authority (Rekabet Kurumu) has ruled against the proposed acquisition by Terminal Investment Limited Sàrl (TIL) of Marport Liman İşletmeleri Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi. The authority said that the takeover would significantly reduce competition at the port. TIL, part of Geneva-based MSC, had wanted to take over port management and container handling related to hinterland traffic. In 2019, Arkas
Holding was set to transfer its holding in Marport, the port business at Ambarlı Port, Istanbul, to TIL which initiated a review by the Turkish Competition Authority. Marport started in 1996 as a container terminal in port of Ambarlı under the name of Limar. As a result of continuously increasing container volumes to Turkey and the need of improving yard and berth capacity, Armaport was purchased and Marport Terminal Operators S.A. was founded by the joint venture of Arkas Holding and TIL (Terminal Investment Limited) in 2001.
