Piraeus, Greece (PortSEurope) February 12, 2021 – Speaking at a 2021 New Year’s Reception, U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey R. Pyatt, said that President Biden and his team are friends of Greece who recognize the strategic value of the relationship. The ambassador when on to say that technology giants like Microsoft, Digital Realty, Pfizer, Cisco, Deloitte, Applied Materials, and Amazon Web Services show how American companies
had responded to the Greek government’s good policy signals with real investments that grow jobs and opportunity. Pyatt also said, “I’m optimistic that this year will also bring significant American investment in key port and shipyard privatizations, as well as progress on the transformative casino resort project at Hellenikon”. The U.S. is seeking a stake in the ports of Igoumenitsa, Kavala and potentially Volos via private American companies but with funding from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). Further information can be read in the PortSEurope article Who wants what in Greek ports’ privatisation. Greece’s ports are becoming a geopolitical and financial playground that has drawn interest from all the major powers, according to an article in the English language edition of Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini. Companies from the U.S., China and Russia, but also from Israel, Italy and Germany, have already set foot in or set their sights on Greek ports, from Alexandroupoli in the north to Iraklio in Crete, and from Igoumenitsa and Astakos in the west to Volos and Kavala in the east and northeast respectively.
