Avilés Port To Launch €135,000 Rainwater Collection Project

Avilés, Spain (PortSEurope) May 15, 2019 – Avilés port plans to launch a €135,000 ($151,000) project for the channeling, conservation and use of the rainwater collected by the roof of the new warehouse of company Asturiana de Fertilizantes for its use in irrigation.

The project is part of the environmental strategy of the port authority, “whose purpose is the constant search for solutions that minimise the impact of port activities, in this case through the reduction of consumption of a resource as valuable as potable water,” the port said.

With the collaboration of Asturiana de Fertilizantes, the port will store the rainwater collected by the roof so that it can be used later by the companies that operate on the docks in activities that contribute to reducing polluting emissions of sedimentary particles such as irrigation of ore piles, machinery washing, etc.

The work that begins today will be carried out by Spanish company Penalbas 2012 with an estimated execution time of four months. The project consists of the construction of a reinforced concrete tank of 350 cubic metres for the storage of rainwater and its subsequent use.
