Baleària Encouraged To Restart Gijón-Saint Nazaire Motorway Of The Sea

Baleària encouraged to restart Gijón-Saint Nazaire motorway of the sea

Gijón, Spain (PortSEurope) April 10, 2018 – The Baleària Eurolínias Marítimas S.A. shipping line has been encouraged to resume the motorway of the ea route linking the ports of Gijón and France’s Saint Nazaire. Minister of Development, Íñigo de la Serna, has declared his optimism in Asturias and encouraged Baleària to present the project to the European Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funds before the end of the deadline
for the presentation of candidacies next Saturday, April 14, given the environmental awareness of the shipping company and its ambitious plans for the use of natural gas-fuelled vessels. Last November, the financing of the line appeared as one of the keys to a possible re-launch, since everything would be pending as the European funding was resolved, while a possible subsidy by the Government of Asturias, which could have accelerated the start-up of the sea highway, loses momentum. With this project, Baleària could disembark in the Bay of Biscay, a new market for the shipping company, this year in a line that was operational between 2010 and 2014. Baleària is a leading shipping company that connects the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla with mainland Spain. It also operates in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria) and in the Caribbean (United States and the Bahamas), where the firm has an ambitious expansion plan.
