Balearic Ports See 3% Increase In Half Year Traffic

Palma, Mallorca, Spain (PortSEurope) August 11, 2019 – Total merchandise traffic in the public ports of Illes Balears increased by 3% in the first half of 2019, compared to the same period last year, with more than 8.3 million tonnes registered. Passenger traffic increased 5% to over 3.5 million movements.

In June, the port of Maó registers the largest increase of 15% reaching 365,542 tons; Eivissa (6% and 1,646,163), Palma (5% and 5,240,558), Savina (-6% and 141,292); and Alcúdia (-8% and 929,691).

For general merchandise, ie, consumer products, the total increase was 6%, with 6,841,700 tons. Maó also leads the growth of this first half of the year with 15% and 254,810 tons; followed by Palma (7% and 4,584,235); Eivissa (7% and 1,503,954); Alcúdia (-8% and 367,198); and Savina (-8% and 13,503).

Traffic of liquid bulks, mainly fuels, decreased 12% in comparison to the first half of 2018. Only the port of Eivissa increased, by 2% in this section, reaching almost 92,000 tons. Meanwhile, solid bulks (cement and other construction materials, basically) were stable in general but with large differences by ports. It increased 165% in Maó with 24,676 tons, in Palma (53% and 140,401) and in Savina (28% and 9,789), while descending in Eivissa (-19% and 50,337) and in Alcúdia (- 9% and 532,966), especially due to the decrease in coal discharge.

Passengers increased 5% from January to June 2019 in relation to the same period last year, exceeding 3.5 million passengers. It also increases the number of regular line passengers by 5%, with more than 2.5 million in the year (2.3 million if drivers of cargo vehicles are excluded). All ports grew in this section, with the exception of the port of La Savina (-2% and 784,481 pax.). Maó registered the largest increase (61% and 41,588 pax.), Followed by Alcúdia (15% and 214,583 pax) where the movement of the regular open line with the south of France is reflected, Palma (14% and 477,346 pax) and Eivissa (4% and 1,050,321 pax). 

There is also an increase in the number of cruise passengers (4%) with one million cruise passengers so far in all ports of general interest in the Balearic Islands, but with very irregular behaviours: strong falls in the port of Maó (-66% and 12,232 pax) and Alcúdia (-50% and 673 pax) and increases in Eivissa (23% and 116,644 pax) and Palma (5% and 872,893 pax).

In the ports managed by Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares, the number of ships also increases by 13% with 22,882 stops and 4% gross tonnage with 112 million GT in the first six months of 2019.
