Customs Free Zone planned for Brindisi port

Brindisi, Italy (PortSEurope) November 6, 2020 – A Customs Free Zone (ZFD – Zona Franca Doganale) could be built on part of the site of the Federico II thermoelectric power station in southern Brindisi, for which the conversion from coal to gas units is underway. The director of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, Marcello Minenna, the president of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico
Meridionale (AdSP – Southern Adriatic Sea Port Authority), Ugo Patroni Griffi, and the director of Enel Italia, Carlo Tamburi, discussed it via videoconference. The ZFD could occupy some areas not useful for the current energy transition path. “The Customs Free Zones are the strategic driving force of the ZES. In addition to the advantages of the SEZs (simplifications and tax credit), companies that settle in these areas have the ability to manage goods in transit and to produce authentic “Made in Italy” in suspension of VAT and duties. The management and administrative aspect is also favorable for companies as the EU Regulation applies directly. The ZFDs are therefore magnets for new logistic and industrial settlements. Strongly sought after by the market, especially at a time when the fragility of the supply chain, exposed by the pandemic, is leading many companies to locate their plants in Europe2, said Patroni Griffi. He added, “Brindisi is the ideal candidate for the ZFD having a backport with an excellent railway and road infrastructure and huge areas currently unused. The attention of a player such as Enel will allow us to develop synergistically the plan that can be implemented once the areas owned by Enel to be included in the ZFD and those relating to the Maritime Property that are candidates for ZFD and which the Authority is preparing to complete the infrastructure as required by the port regulatory plan”.
