
DP World Limassol sees the return of cruise ships

Limassol, Cyprus (PortSEurope) September 28, 2021 – On World Tourism Day, DP World Limassol has announced the return of cruise ships to Cyprus. In 2020, the company’s Limassol terminal handled 19 cruise ships. In 2021, 36 visits have taken place and 2022 is set to be a boom year. Both 2019 and 2020 were effected by the Covid-19 coronavirus crisis. In a press release, the
CEO of DP World Limassol, Nawaf Abdulla, spoke about the Company’s commitment to Inclusive Growth, pointing out that “the Company’s vision to turn the Limassol port into a major regional cruise hub, as well as its goal to promote the sustainable growth of cruise tourism in Cyprus, is aimed at driving growth across the entire country. Specifically, shore excursions and tours from Limassol port offer tourists the opportunity to discover the island’s beautiful but remote countryside, thereby boosting the economies of rural and mountain communities.” Mr Abdulla also spoke about the gradual return to cruising at Limassol port: “While our numbers haven’t yet reached pre-pandemic levels, the sector’s performance has been picking up, given the circumstances. Besides, in October, we are expecting a surge in cruise ship arrivals. The return to cruising was quicker than expected, as cruise operators have been implementing strict health protocols on board. As such, we are cautiously optimistic for the upcoming period.” The press release can be read here. In April 2016 DP World Limassol was awarded a 25-year concession to exclusively operate the multi-purpose and Cruise terminal in Limassol commencing February 2017. The terminal’s activities, comprising of three multi-purpose quays, include break-bulk, general cargo, Ro-Ro, oil & gas services and the brand-new passenger terminal. DP World Limassol port is the main cruise port of the island located on the Southern coast of Cyprus and considered as one of the largest and busiest ports of the Mediterranean. The brand new 7,000 sqm Cruise Terminal commenced operations in July 2017, offering Cruise lines and passengers a plethora of services to accommodate all their needs accompanied by the high standards and efficiency of DP World Limassol.
