Elefsina Port Authority and DESFA sign agreement to develop LNG capabilities

Piraeus, Greece (PortSEurope) April 7, 2021 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Elefsina Port Authority (O.L.E. SA)and the Operator of the National Natural Gas System (DESFA) for thedevelopment, expansion and promotion of the availability of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), as an environmentally friendly fuel. The cooperation of the two entities upgrades the Port of Elefsina to an important energy hub
in the development of the supply chain with trucks and LNG (LNG Truck Loading) – where LNG can be transported by trucks to unconnected facilities around the country – through the use of its port facilities and from the island Revithoussa, where DESFA’s LNG Terminal is located. The MoU includes: The use of the following facilities: the port of Krona, Peraena, Megaridos and Almyra of Megara) for the maritime transport of tankersLNG tanker trucks by ferry from and to the nearby island of Revithoussa, after completion of all necessary traffic and environmental studies, as well as safety studies, which will be carried out with the care andDESFA.The loading station will enable the use of natural gas by consumers in areas where the Greek National System has not been developed. DESFA will facilitate its use as a fuel in the shipping (LNG-fuelled ships).Finally, DESFA is undertaking with its own resources the extension of the building of the O.L.E. SA at the entrance of the central port of Elefsina, in order to cover the increased needs of the Agency for the accommodation of all its services and will immediately hold events to inform the residents of the new building, in order to meet the needs of the area on the movement and benefits of natural gas, the use of natural gas, the use of which will be a key factor in the development of the use of which is intended to gradually reduce air pollutant emissions. The LNG Truck Loading Station (LNG Truck Loading Station) ensures thesecurity of supply and offers an economical and flexible solution for industries, crafts, agricultural facilities and residential consumers in areasremote from the natural gas network, enhancing the competitiveness ofand offers the possibility of using natural gas as a natural gas fuel in shipping. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding reflects the ambition of O.L.E. SA to transform the Port of Elefsina into a “green” port with absolute respect to development and environmental protection and contributes to the promotion and exploitation of the energy and environmental policy actions, which aim to eliminate the air pollutants and reduce carbon dioxide through the use of LNG, in accordance with the requirements of the relevant national and European regulations. Elefsis is located about 20 km northwest of Piraeus and 30 minutes from Athens’ international airport El. Venizelos. The main port serves dry bulk and general cargo vessels, while oil tankers and LPG carriers visit Elefsis Refinery in a daily base.
