Tanger Med, Morocco (PortSEurope) June 28, 2019 – Morocco opened on June 27 new terminals at Tanger Med port adding 6 million TEUs of annual capacity and becoming the largest Mediterranean port.
A total of 1.3 billion were invested in the expansion project allowing Tanger Med to surpass competitors like Algeciras and Valencia in terms of capacity.
According to estimates, Tanger Med will handle 4.5 million TEUs this year, while the full capacity of the harbour will be reached in six years.
Moroccan authorities aim to make Tanger Med an export hub for the local factories of carmakers Renault and Peugeot.
The annual container handling capacity of the port before the expansion project was 3.5 million TEUs.
