New China, Russia container service through the port of Novorossiysk

Posted on

Novorossiysk, Russia (Ports Europe) August 31, 2022 – A new China-Russia container service through the port of Novorossiysk will start next month. In September, Russia’s private logistics operator RusCon will start a new multimodal route for the delivery of containers from China to Russia through the port of Novorossiysk. The service will handle 40-foot containers, including dangerous goods.

Transit time from the Chinese port of Taicang to Novorossiysk will be 40 days. The service will start from Taicang on September 11, then will go to China’s port of Qingdao, from where it will head to Istanbul on September 16. In Turkey, a feeder vessel will deliver containers to the NUTEP terminal in Novorossiysk.

According to Sergey Berezkin, President of RusCon, the company is establishing new supply chains and testing similar multimodal services along the Southern Sea Route. New markets will replace previous markets in Europe and other countries due to international sanctions. Russia started a war with Ukraine in February and was quickly subject to widespread international sanctions. Alternative markets are needed fro both imports and exports.

The Delo Group

Both RusCon and NUTEP are part of the Delo Group.

Delo Group of Companies is the largest transport and logistics holding in Russia, managing sea container terminals in the Azov-Black Sea, Baltic and Far Eastern basins, a network of railway container terminals, a fleet of containers and fitting platforms.

The parent company of the group is Delo Management Company. The group’s stevedoring business includes DeloPorts holding and container terminal operator Global Ports. The transport and logistics sector is represented by the multimodal transport operator RusCon and the intermodal container operator TransContainer. The shipping line of the business is the holding Sakhalin Shipping Company (SASCO).

Port of Novorossiysk

For the April-July 2022 period, RusCon reported a total of 10,000 TEU in import and export cargo traffic on multimodal services through the port of Novorossiysk.

NovoMorSnab will complete the reconstruction of the container terminal in the port of Novorossiysk by year-end, which will allow it to handle 500,000 tonnes of cargo, terminal’s General Director Alexei Garmash said in July.

Reconstruction of the terminal has been underway since 2020. It involves repairs of two railway tracks construction of two warehouses with an area of 4,700 and 6,000 m², a site for transshipment of grain in bulk, and installation of equipment for loading lumber and long cargo. By the end of September, a third railway track will be constructed in the terminal.

Novomorsnab is a freight forwarding company operating two terminals in Novorossiysk, Russia’s largest port.

Sanctions affecting trade

By the beginning of July, the reduction in the container transportation in the northwestern region of Russia was about 60%, due to the massive western sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. By the end of summer, that number could reach 90%. The only viable alternative is Novorossiysk.

In Novorossiysk, the decrease in container handling was 50%. It is expected to remain at this level until the end of the year, according to Alexander Tysyachnikov of Russian Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics Organizations.

The Port of Novorossiysk Sea was Russia’s leading grain exporter in 2021/22. It handled 14.7 million tons of grain for export, including wheat – 12.4 million tons, barley – 1.1 million tons, corn – 456,000 tons and others
