Studies set to expand Kavala port rail connections

Kavala, Greece (PortSEurope) December 5, 2018 – The commercial port of Kavala was visited by a workshop of the contractor of the project “Phase C of Studies of the New Monastery of the Railway Connection of the Railway Network with the commercial port of Kavala”. 

According to the Port Authority of Kavala, the project has been awarded with Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding.

In particular, the implementation of the Phase C of the remaining studies, which completes all the studies required for the construction of the New Monastery Railroad (NMG) project, which connects the commercial port with the existing Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis railway line in the Toxotes area of ​​Xanthi. 

The main railway line has a total length of 31.8 km. A second line could link the Commercial Port of Kavala, the Industrial Area of ​​Greece. Kavala and the Phosphate Fertilizer Industry with the main line.

The contractual price is €1.27 million (excluding VAT). 

The connection of the commercial port of Kavala with the existing railway network will contribute positively to the operational linking of the Eastern Mediterranean Motorway of the Sea with Axis 7 of the European Rail Network for Competitive Freight Transport and European Priority Project 18 (Danube) (Neo Ikonio, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Nea Karvali), with developing industrial areas (the wider Kavala city area).
