Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) February 11, 2019 – Valencia port has experienced a historic change in the leadership of its international traffic in 2018, precisely in the midst of a commercial battle between the two great world heavyweights: the United States and China.
During this century, China has been the great driver of the growth of Valencia port as the main origin and destination for traffic.
However, last year the United States snatched that leadership from China and consolidated a surprising turn of cargo from East to West. The North American country was origin or destination of 6.46 million tonnes of through Valencia, 26.36% more than in 2017. The US ports, with Houston in fifth place in the ranking for traffic and New York in the ninth, represented almost 8.5% of the total traffic of Valencia.
With the data in hand, paradoxically it seems that the arrival in the White House of Donald Trump and his mediatic protectionist polemics have favoured the traffic with that country, since it grew by almost 48% in three years.
In the case of China, total traffic fell by 8.65%, in line with the fall in exports from the Asian country. The general figures also require certain qualifications. On the one hand, despite the opposite evolution of both giants of world trade in the last year, China still dominates the star traffic of the port of Valencia: containers.
