Cádiz, Spain (PortSEurope) January 10, 2020 – Autoridad Portuaria de la Bahía de Cádiz (APBC – Port Authority of Cadiz) plans invest almost €2 million in various measures to improve environmental quality of the La Cabezuela-Puerto Real dock.

The main project will be the execution of new protection screens during bulk handling work on loading and unloading ships. To the existing barriers of protection will be added new ones with a more efficient design that limits even more the propagation of the dust in suspension. The protected area will be expanded from the current 75 metres, to 233 linear metres.

Likewise, four mobile water spray cannons will be installed, in order to complement the protection of certain bulk handling positions and improve the protective action of the barriers in certain weather conditions.

In the same way, to avoid the accumulation of material in cavities and to facilitate the cleaning of the docks, the paving will be improved in the storage areas and exit roads.

With the aim of maximizing the management of heavy vehicle traffic and controlling the cleaning of the circulation areas of said vehicles in a more efficient way, the signaling of the internal connection roads of the port will also be improved, mainly between the area of loading and unloading and docking at dock, and port access.

Finally, the Port Authority will establish an independent wind speed and direction measurement system, which informs the operator and the port surveillance of the need to implement water spray measures when the predefined threshold values are exceeded or even stop of the activity from a certain value for certain addresses.

The Port Authority plans to tender the draft of these measures before the end of the year.

In parallel, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía, APBC is working for the installation of two state-of-the-art measuring stations, which will be located next to the service station located at the exit of the bridge in Puerto Real and in the Wind environment of Levante, in Cádiz, and with which the effectiveness of the implemented environmental improvements can be controlled, in addition to knowing in detail the emissions in both areas in real time.
