Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) February 13, 2019 – French railway transporter company Viia plans to open its new railway line between Barcelona port and the Luxembourg city of Bettembourg on February 19. The company has its own terminals in Bettembourg and in Le Boulou (France), among others.
The project was announced in 2015 and required an investment of €33 million ($37.34 million). It consists of a combined transport service that integrates the railway and the road: the trucks embark directly on the train, unloaded at the railway terminal and the last kilometres of the route end up by road.
The launch of the service represents an advance in the strategy of the Barcelona port authority, which aims to raise the share of rail in the transport of goods which last year stood at 13%. The Viia project has as its first objectives to connect the port of the Catalan capital with Aulney (Paris) this year and with Germany in 2020.
