Greek statement after EU-Southern Neighbourhood Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

“As we share a common sea, we must follow common rules. Turkey constantly violates international law, stability and security in the region. “We can not allow anyone to be the bully in our neighborhood,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Barvitsiotis during his speech at today’s EU-Southern Neighborhood Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which took place online. He added that Greece is the one that shows the way of cooperation, with
the two maritime delimitation agreements it signed with Italy and Egypt – November 26, 2020 “Today, Greece, honoring its historical and traditional ties with the Mediterranean countries, strongly supports a new era of cooperation and attaches particular importance to the southern dimension of the European Neighborhood Policy,” said the Deputy Minister. He also noted that “the strong relationship between the EU and the Mediterranean countries has the potential to turn into a strategic relationship”, which will be beneficial in a number of areas, especially during the pandemic period, such as tourism, trade and investment. He also stressed the need for closer co-operation between the Mediterranean countries on climate change, noting that the European Green Agreement provides the appropriate coherent institutional framework for joint action. It is recalled that the strategic goal of today’s Summit and tomorrow’s Regional Forum hosted in Barcelona is to restart and strengthen the cooperation relations between the European Union and the third Mediterranean countries.
