Koper, Slovenia (PortSEurope) June 22, 2020 – A train carrying 198 cars of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has arrived today at Koper port’s Car & Ro-Ro terminal destined for export to mainly China. JLR has been shipping cars through Koper since 2017, when they started cooperating with their partner production plant in Graz, Austria. Since the opening of their own production plant in Nitra, Slovakia,
in October 2018, overseas export volumes have been growing. In addition to regular truck shipments, the cars will be arriving also from Nitra by train. JLR has chosen the logistic route via Port of Koper because of good experience related to high-end car handling and the vast network of car-carrier services to the Mediterranean and Asia. The vehicles are mostly exported to China with the weekly MOL service, while the Mediterranean – mostly Greece, Egypt, Israel, Turkey and Cyprus – is served by many weekly Intra-Med services calling Koper. Throughput of cars was 162,722 units in the first three months of 2020, a 4% decrease compared to the first quarter of 2019. However, port investment activities are in full swing, as two major investments have been completed in recent months: the new dedicated terminal rail access and the new Ro-Ro berth, while the construction of the additional garage for 6,000 units is proceeding on plan. According to the ranking published every year by Automotive Logistics – Finished Vehicle Logistics, Koper gained two places in 2019 as the seventh-largest automotive port in Europe and third in the Mediterranean. The opening ceremony for the new Ro-Ro berth was held earlier in June. The berth can accept vessels from 100 m to 240 m of length, with a draft of 10 metres. The total cost of the investment was €6 million, partly financed by the EU project CarEsmatic. Minister of Infrastructure of Slovenia, Jernej Vrtovec, was present to show the government’s support for current and future development projects and expansion of port areas. The new facility will help keep the port competitive and is one of a number on recent port investments CarEsmatic is an EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) co-financed Action. Its aim is to increase the use of Motorways of the Sea services for transportation of new cars in the Mediterranean basin.
