As part of the determined effort of the Port of Marseilles Fos to give a fresh lease of life to the 25,500 m² J1 hangar, and following an international call for projects launched in June 2017, the consortium comprising VINCI Construction France and ADIM Provence, its property development subsidiary, together with the Banque des Territoires of the Caisse des Dépôts, was declared the winner in
January 2019 with the project designated “J1- La Passerelle” (J1 – the Bridge) – October 9, 2020 A further step towards the realisation of the project was taken with the signing by the stakeholders of the 70-year temporary occupancy agreement undertaking. The “J1 – La Passerelle” project, designed by the Reichen et Robert architectural agency, was guided by the desire to restore the link between city and port, and the shared ambition to give access to the sea back to the people of Marseille. This urban project proposes to develop a large esplanade of more than 12,000 m², entirely open to all, sheltered by a vast canopy. The architectural choice was to preserve the spirit of the place alive, with its heritage gem of a large hangar, steeped in the history of the city and the collective folk memory. This decision aims to make the J1 an iconic emblem of Marseille and a must-see destination. The redeveloped building will contribute to the outreach of Marseille through a wide variety of activities and programmes: culture, leisure, tertiary activities, education & training, restaurants and hotels. The next few months will be devoted in particular to finalising the design studies and filing for the construction permit, so that work can begin in early 2022, with sign-off scheduled for 2024.
