Port Authority of Elefsina plans rail connection

Piraeus, Greece (PortSEurope) July 27, 2021 – The Port Authority of Elefsina has held a first meeting to examine alternatives for a connection between the port and the national rail network. Participants included the CEO of the Port of Elefsina Organization (OLE) Apostolos Kamarinakos and Diethon Kamerinakis Advisor of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) SA Spyros Patera as well as the Deputy Managing Director of
OSE Athanasios Kottaras. During the meeting, Kamarinakis referred to the importance of connecting the port infrastructure of Elefsina with the railway for the development of combined freight transport and pointed out the strategic advantages of the port, as a natural port of Thriasio Pedio, for the promotion of logistics, the ability to serve the market in bulk cargo, its proximity to the main road network and airport facilities that could in the future be used for commercial purposes, as well as the operation of several industrial units along the extensive land port. Pateras referred to the development plans promoted by port authority for the utilization of the railway network in the region of West Attica as well as to the importance for the railway and freight transport of its connection with the major ports and airports of the country. Elefsis is located about 20 km northwest of Piraeus and 30 minutes from Athens’ international airport El. Venizelos. The main port serves dry bulk and general cargo vessels, while oil tankers and LPG carriers visit Elefsis Refinery in a daily base. Source: Port Authority of Elefsina
