Port of Algeciras sees total traffic slightly down in 2020

Algeciras, Spain (PortSEurope) February 2, 2021 – The Port of Algeciras ended 2020 with a total traffic of 107.3 million tons (-1.9%) and 5.1 million teus (-0.4%). The port accounted for 21% of the freight traffic absorbed by the Spanish port system. These are the main figures for the last year in which the increase in general merchandise (+1.9%), containerized goods (+1.8%) and truck traffic
in the Strait (+1.6%) stands out. On the negative side, in addition to bulk, passenger traffic plummeted (-74.7%) due to the closure of Moroccan borders since March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 coronavirus crisis. Lorry traffic between both shores of the Strait totals 373,875 trucks, of which 343,777 units (+5.3%) opted for the Algeciras-Tangier Med line, a link that has proven to be strategic during 2020 for the maintenance of the flow of goods between the North Africa and Europe. The port hopes to repeat these figures and above all, to recover passenger traffic from the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa with those of Tangier Med and Tangier City.
