Ukraine And Latvia To Develop Economic Cooperation

Odessa, Ukraine (PortSEurope) November 28, 2018 – Ukraine and Latvia plan to cooperate in the transport sector and expand economic cooperation.

This was agreed at a meeting between President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the President of the Republic of Latvia, Raymond Wellonius; also present was Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) Raivis Veckagans.

“USPA is already actively reforming its port industry. This concerns the implementation of public-private partnership projects, increasing the efficiency of the port management model, and introducing corporate governance.

Latvian ports operate according to European rules, we are also moving towards in Ukrainian ports. This year, USPA reached an agreement on membership in the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) ,but we still have a lot to do and the experience of our colleagues from Latvia and other European countries will be very useful for us”, said Raivis Veckagans.

The agreement applies to both freight and passenger transport. In addition, over the last nine months, trade between Ukraine and Latvia has increased by 43%. This shows a great potential for further development.

Next year the meeting of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Latvian Committee on Economic, Cultural Industrial and Scientific and Technical Cooperation is scheduled.
