Gijón, Spain (PortSEurope) February 14, 2019 – Gijón port was the Spanish port with the highest percentage decline in cargo traffic, of -9.8%, surpassed only by the negative figure for the inner harbour of Melilla, according to statistics of Spanish ports agency Puertos del Estado.
With 19.68 million tonnes handled, Gijón port recorded the tenth highest volume of traffic of the 28 port authorities in Spain. The previous year had been in ninth place, but in 2018 it was ousted by Castellón, which grew by 18%. The entire state port system in 2018 broke its record, with 563.4 million tonnes.
